NATIONALFOREWORD
This Indian Standard which is identical with IEC 60529: 2001 Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP code) issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Basic Electrotechnical Standards Sectional Committee and approval of Electrotechnical Division Council.
This standard is a cosolidation version (Ed 2.1 published in 2001) based on originally published in 1989 along with its Amendment NO.1 published in 1999. A vertical line in the margin shows where the base publication has been modified by Amendment NO.1.
This standard supersedes IS 12063 : 1987 Classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment.
Annexes A and B are for information only.
The text of iEC Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particuiarly drawn to the following :
a) Wherever the words International Standard appear referring to this standard, they should be read as Indian Standard.
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker in the International Standard while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
