NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 1) which is identical with ISO 5834-1 : 2005 ‘Implants for surgery — Ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene — Part 1: Powder form’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of Orthopaedic Instruments Implant and Accessories Sectional Committee and approval of the Medical Equipment and Hospital Planning Division Council.
IS 5347 (Part 10) was first published in 1987 based on ISO 5834-1 : 1985. It is now being published as IS/ISO 5834-1 to align with the latest ISO Standard brought out in 2005.
This standard will supersede IS 5347 (Part 10) : 1987 ‘Requirements for orthopaedic implants: Part 10 Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene powder form’ and after publication of this standard, IS 5347 (Part 10) : 1987 shall be treated as withdrawn.
The text of the ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are however not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
