Revised Standard from Last Update.
NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 1) (First Revision) which is identical with ISO 6621-1 : 2018 ‘Internal combustion engines — Piston rings — Part 1: Vocabulary’ issued by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on recommendations of the Automotive Prime Movers, Transmission Systems and Internal Combustion Engines Sectional Committee and approval of the Transport Engineering Division Council.
This subject was first covered in IS 8422 (Part 9) : 1986 ‘Specification for piston rings for IC engines — Part 9: Terms and definitions’. In order to harmonize the standard with ISO Standard the committee decided to adopt ISO 6621-1 : 2007 under single number. In April 2012 the standard was withdrawn after the publication of IS/ISO 6621-1 : 2007. The first revision of this standard has been undertaken to align it with ISO 6621-1 : 2018.
The major changes in this revision are as follows:
a) Annex A was updated with improved translations in Portuguese, Japanese and Russian and a new term ‘witness line’ was added; and
b) Figure quality was improved.
This Indian Standard is published in two parts. The other part in this series is:
Part 2 Inspection measuring principles
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminologies and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this standard may be the subject of patent rights. The Bureau of Indian Standards shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
Annex A is for information only.
