This Indian Standard (Part 2) (First Revision) which is identical with ISO/IEC 17021-2 : 2016 ‘Conformity assessment - Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems - Part 2: Competence requirements for auditing and certification of environmental management systems’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) jointly was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on recommendation of the CASCO National Mirror Committee and approval of the Management and Systems Division Council.

This standard was originally published in 2016 and was based on ISO/IEC TS 17021-2 : 2012.

The major changes in this revision are as follows:

a) Addition of the new requirements of ISO 14001 : 2015 which required additional competence to audit them;

b) Adaptation of the competence requirements to reflect the greater focus in ISO 14001 : 2015 on expected outcomes;

c) Clarification of the difference between sustainable development and sustainability;

d) Inclusion of competence criteria for the auditor to understand the context of the organization; and

e) Inclusion of competence to audit the reliability of client communications about their EMS.

This Indian Standard is published in several parts. The other parts in this series are:

Part 1 Requirements

Part 3 Competence requirements for auditing and certification of quality management systems

Part 4 Competence requirements for auditing and certification of event sustainability management systems

Part 5 Competence requirements for auditing and certification of asset management systems

The text of ISO/IEC Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminologies and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
